The Long Way Home
Product Description
Four women bound by chance take the trip of a lifetime in Karen McQuestion's fifth novel The Long Way Home.
For Wisconsinites Marnie, Laverne and Rita, life isn't working out so well. Each is biding time, waiting for something better, something to transport them out of what their lives have recently become. And then there's Jazzy: bubbly, positive, and happy even though she hears voices of the departed. Brought together by a chance meeting, the women decide to join Marnie on a road trip from Wisconsin to Las Vegas where she intends to reunite with Troy, the boy she raised as her own—and who she's been separated from since her boyfriend's death. Little do they know that as the road trip unfolds, so will their lives—in directions they never anticipated. Humorous, heartwarming, and bittersweet, the journey has something special in store for each woman.

I'd love to see Amanda Seyfried as the psychic, Jazzy, Sandra Bullock as Marnie, Meryl Streep as Rita, and Betty White as Laverne. This was a completely enjoyable read. Right from the start I was hooked and as I kept reading I found myself loving the characters and enjoying the plot twists that occurred as they traveled by car from Wisconsin to Las Vegas. There are four characters--all women, ranging in age from 20-ish to senior citizen (70s?). In a lot of books I find myself invested in one or two characters and skimming when it comes to the others, but not this one. Despite the fact that three of them first meet in a Grief group, this isn't a depressing book, although there were some touching moments. There was some fun humor as well. 81 of 86 people found the following review helpful Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: The Long Way Home (Kindle Edition) I've become really fussy lately when it comes to books. I don't know if it's me or what, but I find that so often the deep, literary novels are a slog and the fun, light ones are too campy and unbelievable. Lately I've started a lot of books and can't seem to get past the first fifty pages. This book then, was a nice surprise. Despite the sort of out-there premise, the set up was such that I completely believed four women who were complete strangers would actually go on a road trip together. I liked the diverse cast of characters and I wasn't able to predict the story twists. I also tend to favor happy endings and this one delivered on that count. Being from the Midwest, I enjoyed the Wisconsin idioms that are sprinkled throughout. If you find the beginning intriguing, I believe you'll love the rest of the book. I can honestly recommend it! 63 of 66 people found the following review helpful By This review is from: The Long Way Home (Paperback) Karen McQuestion has done it again! The Long Way Home is a truly new take on the ever so done road trip book. I am always hesitant to read a road trip plot based book, because I feel like for the most part I have read them all before, although this road trip is much needed for these ladies and there is some self discovery involved.. you will not find anything cheesy.I loved each and every character. They each had qualities in them that were truly endearing and they also had qualities that made you groan and roll your eyes. However, they complimented each other well, there wasn't one person who you strongly disliked or who was going to cause a huge rift, that would create to awkward dramatic lull in the story. I must say though what is better than the story itself is McQuestion's talent to write realistically. Something I have always respected about her writing. There were moments when I would say out loud " oh my god, that is something I would Do!" or say, or think... Read more |
